Workers’ Memorial Day 2009

07 April, 2009 Workers’ Memorial Day remembers all those killed or injured as a result of their work, and marked by ceremonies on or around 28 April. Unions, workers and their families and friends gather to remember the men, women and children who were killed or injured at work, or became sick from exposure to hazardous substances; tortured, imprisoned, murdered or oppressed because of their trade union activities; or suffered degradation, pollution or destruction of their communities due to unsustainable work practices.

This year’s International Workers Memorial Day on April 28 will focus on the need for the highest standards in harmonised OHS laws. The following events have been arranged.

Brisbane
9.30am Rally and March from Queens Park (Cnr George, Mary and William Street, City) to Parliament. ACTU President Sharan Burrow to address rally at Parliament.

10.30am Victorian Trades Hall Council will hold a joint ceremony with Industrial Deaths, Support and Advocacy Inc. at Argyle Square,(off Lygon St) Construction unions will also hold a rally and stop work at 10am on the steps of Trades Hall.

One minute silence across NSW building sites (various times) and an event at 12.30pm at Reflection Park, Little Pier St, Darling Harbour opposite Sydney Entertainment Centre.
