International Solidarity

The ACTU strives  to build international solidarity, and supports the development of independent, democratic and effective trade unions globally. The ACTU also believes in the:
  • Defence of human rights
  • Provision of humanitarian assistance
  • Building on our participation in international bodies such as  ITUC and the ILO
  • Encouragement to affiliates to incorporate a higher level of international effort and understanding in their organising and industrial strategies

  We are gravely concerned, in light of these developments, for the safety and continued liberty of all unionists in Fiji, and ask that you direct the Australian Ambassador to Fiji to make appropriate inquiries.  
  We share the sorrow of all New Zealanders at the tragic loss of life, and the impact this earthquake will have on the lives and livelihoods of tens of thousands of New Zealanders.  
  The ACTU is gravely concerned over the situation in Egypt and the escalation of violence which has occurred in recent days.  
  The organisations we represent are very concerned about the proposed re-opening of the Jeffrey asbestos mine in Quebec. We understand that the new mine may have annual exports of 200,000 tons of asbestos for the next 25 to 50 years.  
  We abhor the aggression against Saharawi civilians and calls on the Kingdom of Morocco to fully respect the basic human rights of the Sahawari people and allow them to exercise their rights to self-determination.  
 
Request that Canada ban asbestos

The ACTU calls on your government to ban the mining and use of asbestos in Canada with immediate effect.
 
  t is timely for APEC to formalise a permanent structure for consultation with trade unions, to support and promote the work of trade unions in their dialogue with governments, businesses and other groups involved in the APEC process.  
  I am writing to express our very deep concern at the discovery of a common grave near to the Colombian town of La Macarena. We also condemn the murder of Mr. Jhonny Hurtado, one of the human rights activists who denounced the existence of the grave.  
  Two trade unionists are on hunger strike outside the Green Isle Foods plant in Naas, Co Kildare, Ireland. They are members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union.  
  We are calling for full democratic rights for all Turkish citizens, including freedom of association; a halt to all violent repression; the release of all imprisoned trade unionists; and respect for core labour standards and workers' rights.  
  I am writing to protest in the strongest possible terms at the abuse of power by the Armed Forces of the Philippines by detaining 43 health workers.  
  I am writing to condemn in the strongest possible terms at the attempts by the Government and the management of the JAPDEVA port authority to undermine the leadership of the SINTRAJAP trade union.  
  Amnesty International and the ACTU believe that an important step would be the ratification of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families.  
  I call on UN Human Rights High Commissioner to do all in her power to bring pressure on Morocco to allow Aminatou Haidar to travel home to be with her children in El Aaiun, Western Sahara, in accordance with Article 12 of the International Covenant...
