Advanced Corporate Research and Campaigning

Who is it for?
The target audience is union researchers and others who have completed the ACTU OECC Introduction to Strategic Industry and Corporate Research Course, and others with corporate research or campaign experience.

Aims
To build on previous research and campaign experience to explore and apply advanced corporate research and campaigning methods.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the steps in designing a campaign, including the development of goals, strategies, tactics, issues and audiences.

  • Explain how strategic research tools can be used to identify company decision makers and how to influence them with the aim of achieving campaign goals.

  • Apply these steps and tools in designing a campaign plan.

  • Analyse key company governance and financial information, including assessing debt and risks in the context of the financial crisis

  • Analyse how unions might use codes of conduct, super fund assessment of investments and shareholder activism in campaigns, in the national and international context, and apply this analysis in a case study.

  • Analyse the use of government inquiries and regulation in corporate campaigns, and apply this analysis in a case study.

  • Discuss the organising opportunities in the new industrial relations legislation, analyse how these can be used in campaigns and apply this analysis in case studies.

  • Discuss working with organizers and members to identify members’ stories to define issues and address audiences, and apply this in a case study

  • Identify when legal advice is needed in the context of company confidentiality, defamation law and secondary boycotts, and apply this analysis in a case study.

Completion of Introduction to Strategic Industry and Corporate Research or experience in corporate research or campaigning
