Organising Foundations

This course is aimed specifically at newly appointed organisers and should be completed within their first six months of appointment. The course covers current organising techniques, skills and knowledge essential to being an effective organiser. Topics include: mobilising workers; planning; identifying workplace leaders and building union culture.

Aims

The course covers essential approaches and techniques that underpin effective organising within the contemporary union movement, including:

  • The organising approach to unionism
  • The characteristics of an organised workplace and the role of the organiser in building union strength
  • Effective planning and campaigning
  • Identifying and developing activists
  • Communication skills, shifting people into action
  • Recruiting workers to the union
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe elements of analysis and planning and why they are critical to effective workplace organising
  • Describe the nature of a strong unionised workplace/workforce and the role of the organiser in building union strength
  • Apply effective recruitment strategies
  • Identify what motivates people to act, analyse and prioritise issues to organise around
  • Apply techniques to overcome barriers and obstacles to building a strong unionised workplace
  • Communicate effectively with union members and workers, plan and implement conversation to shift workers into action (joining the union)
  • Identify effective activist/workplace leaders; describe what motivates people to become involved as volunteers and activists
  • Implement strategies to build effective communication networks in workplaces
  • Apply a problem solving framework to solve workplace problems, identify organising opportunities when applying the problem solving framework
  • Describe key achievements of the Australian union movement
  • Define what union values are and how to establish those values in the workplace
  • Describe a range of workers rights and where these rights originated
