Avoiding catastrophic climate change by reducing carbon emissions and investing in clean energy requires major change across industries and workplaces. From 1 July 2012, a price on carbon emissions will commence – paid by around 500 of Australia’s biggest carbon emitters, and promoting more efficient energy use and investment in renewable energy.
The ACTU is running a series of 10 x one-day seminars for unions in regional areas, between March and June 2012. It is your opportunity to discuss how we can reduce carbon pollution and what union members can do in the workplace to act for a clean energy future.
Who is it for?
Union officials, organisers and senior delegates involved in bargaining in carbon intensive industries, and in other industries where energy efficiency and other savings can be identified and integrated into enterprise bargaining. The aim is to equip you with knowledge and skills to discuss these issues with members, and empower members to take action in the workplace about them.
Topics Covered
Expert speakers and group activities will cover:
- Why action is needed and the economic and environmental impacts of a carbon price paid by large carbon emitters, answering members’ questions;
- How the carbon price will be spent, including how consumers will be compensated through tax cuts and other payments, and how to calculate impacts of compensation on union members and their families;
- Case studies/examples of the transition to clean energy industries, especially in regions with high carbon industries, relevant to each region;
- Case studies/examples of enterprise bargaining clauses and workplace action, relevant to each region.
