Tell The Government What You Think
07 April 2005
What has the Government got to hide?
I am writing to request that you support a Senate inquiry into the Governments proposed industrial relations law changes.
Recently Kevin Andrews, Minister for Workplace Relations, said there would be a Senate Inquiry. But the Prime Minister John Howard has backed away from this commitment.
The proposals announced in the Prime Ministers statement to Parliament on 26 May 2005 represent the most fundamental change to the way Australian workplaces are regulated in over a hundred years.
They involve a massive erosion of the award system, and will diminish the role of the independent Australian Industrial Relations Commission to set minimum wages and conditions and to settle disputes.
It is not good enough for the Government to use taxpayers' money for an advertising campaign to promote its plans but refuse to conduct a thorough Senate Inquiry.
I urge you to support a comprehensive Senate Inquiry that allows individuals across Australia to give evidence about their experiences under existing workplace laws and their views about the proposed changes.
