Abolish Protection From Unfair Dismissals

Factsheet 1.

Abolish protection from unfair dismissal for 4 million workers employed in companies with less than 100 staff

Important changes coming from 1 July 2005.

The Howard Government has said it will use its new Senate powers to take away many of your basic rights at work.

The Government wants to get rid of your right to redundancy pay and protection from unfair dismissal.

The Government has announced that it wants to abolish all unfair dismissal protection for people working in workplaces with less than 100 employees.

This means 99 per cent of private sector employers will be able to sack their workers unfairly, not even giving them a reason for being sacked.

These sacked workers will have no protection under federal law.

The Government is already trying to pass laws that would take away the right of everyone working in small businesses to get redundancy pay – leaving them with nothing if they get sacked or are made redundant.

And workplace agreements – both individual and collective – will no longer have to contain minimum award redundancy provisions.

Unions are committed to protecting job security, which is crucial to working people’s peace of mind and quality of life.

Your job security is a right worth fighting for.
