April jobs figures show unemployment rising

Labour force data released today shows the seasonally adjusted unemployment rising above 5.5 percent from last month and the number of Australians looking for work climbing towards three quarters of a million.

More than a million Australians are under-employed, and more than five percent of the country is unemployed – a figure that has barely changed since Tony Abbott took office in 2013.

With 40% of the workforce now facing one or more dimensions of insecurity in their work, the figures are further proof that the Turnbull Government has failed to deliver more secure jobs for working Australians.

Quotes attributable to ACTU Secretary Sally McManus:

“Australians need more secure jobs, but under the Turnbull Government nearly two million people are either under-employed on unemployed.”

“For those who do have work, job insecurity is on the rise.

“Australians need good, secure jobs they can count on and the Turnbull Government has failed to deliver them.”
