National Legal/Industrial Officer - Professionals Australia

We are looking for a legal/industrial officer to join our national Workplace Advice and Support team and advocate for our members’ employment rights and entitlements.

Role Description

The Workplace Advice and Support (WAS) team at Professionals Australia has been established for over 10 years.

Led by the Principal Legal Officer of the union, you’ll work with other national legal/industrial officers who are passionate about advocating for employment rights and entitlements.This can also involve working closely with the respective State and Territory based teams.

Duties include:

Providing advice to members on a range of employment and industrial matters, including employment contracts,underpayments, sham contracting, general protections,grievances, unfair dismissals, bullying and discrimination matters under relevant state/federal legislation.

Providing representation and advocacy on behalf of members before industrial tribunals such as the Fair Work Commission and courts(primarily the Federal Court of Australia and Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia).

Working collaboratively with other areas of the union, including the state based organising teams, in line with the national allocation arrangements.

Contributing to a collaborative,inclusive, healthy, safe and productive workplace across PA.

Skills and experience

We are looking for someone preferably with some experience in working in a union, a similar member-based organization or a law firm..

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in industrial relations/law.
  • The ability to interpret and apply legislation, industrial instruments and case law to specific matters
  • Experience in representing others, advocacy experience is highly regarded
  • Effective communication,negotiation and influencing skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address employment issues
  • Effective interpersonal skills, to support members facing stressful employment situations and to collaborate effectively with other staff across PA
  • Strong interest and knowledge of contemporary employment issues
  • Commitment to union values and social justice

Salary and conditions

Remuneration is based on skills and experience.

The WAS Team is based in Melbourne. However, regional or interstate applicants who hold the level of experience required will be considered.

Flexible working arrangements, including working from home options (during and after COVID-19 restrictions)

Full-time and part-time employment arrangements are available.

Four days extra paid leave between Christmas and New Year, plus 12 RDOs per annum. Access to professional development opportunities.
