Unions NSW is the peak council of trade unions in NSW representing over 600,000 members and has 47 affiliated Unions and is part of the broader trade union movement.

Unions NSW is seeking to employ a Full Time Campaigns Organiser to work as part of the Unions NSW Campaigns Team for the 2025 Federal Election.

Job Role

The Campaigns Organiser position is an activist role and will work under the direction of the Secretary and with the Campaigns Team Lead to coordinate campaigns ahead of the Federal Election and grow the NSW union movement.

Other relationships include:

  • working with other members of the Campaigns and Communication Teams;
  • liaison with internal members of other teams including Industrial, Research and Administration.
  • working with affiliated union campaigners within designated campaigns and projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Secretary and the Campaigns Team Lead to work to develop and implement Unions NSW campaigning goals by undertaking the following activities:

  • Delivery of elements of the Unions NSW Federal Election Campaign Strategy and tactics.
  • Develop a winning campaign culture at Unions NSW and across the NSW union movement.
  • Assist in positioning Unions NSW as the voice for working people in NSW through innovative strategic campaigning.
  • Assist in ensuring all campaigns contribute to developing the campaigning, industrial and skill capacity within affiliated unions and the NSW union movement.
  • Work with the Campaigns and Communication teams to develop engaging content and messaging across organisational platforms and communications mediums which support designated campaigns.
  • Assist social media content creation where required.
  • Assist with planning and executing various Unions NSW campaign activities which support campaigns including rallies, phonebanks, community events, fundraisers, door knocks and streets stalls.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, NGOs and the wider union movement.
  • Help manage campaigns and project budgets as directed by the CFO and Secretary.
  • Provide transparent and effective reporting of campaign strategy, approach, plans and progress to Secretary.
  • Travel as required to work with affiliates and partner organisations in NSW.
  • Assist with other activities as directed by the Secretary. 

Essential criteria 

  • 3-5 years demonstrated experience developing and implementing growth, issues, industrial and/or political campaigns in unions, advocacy or NGOs.
  • Demonstrated experience and capability to assist in the development of strategic and creative communications to further campaign goals and engage with target audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of the trade union movement.
  • Demonstrated experience in the integration of activist mapping and ladders of engagement for taking members on a journey through a campaign.
  • Excellent communication, messaging and rapport building skills to hold effective one-on-one conversations to create and grow activists.
  • An ability to generate media content and organise workers through social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision to manage a high-volume workload, multitask, prioritise workloads and to meet deadlines in a busy environment.
  • Technologically proficient;
  • Willingness to undertake relevant training.
  • Demonstrated skills in:
    • exercising initiative and independent judgement;
    • work effectively as a member of a team;
    • analysing and resolving problems and conflict; and
    • using digital engagement platforms (incl CRMs), including the ability to use data in campaigns.

To perform the Campaigns Organiser position, you will also be required to have or obtain and maintain:

  • A valid driver’s license.

Conditions and Entitlements 

An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which includes 

  • Personal Leave: 10 days per annum (accumulative).
  • Annual Leave: 5 weeks annual leave with 17.5% leave loading.
  • Superannuation: extra 2% for female identifying staff.

Salary will be commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Hours of work 

  • 35 hours per week which includes some out of hours work and reasonable overtime. Will include some weekend work during peak campaigning periods.
