ACTU Congress 2003

The ACTU Congress is held every three years. It is effectively a parliament for working people, where delegates debate and vote on policies regarding the workplace, rights, and campaigns to improve wages, conditions and quality of life for Australian workers and their families. This process sets the union agenda for a further 3 years.

In 2003, Congress is being attended by nearly 1000 union delegates and will focus on 3 main areas:

  • policies relevant to the future of work (the escalation of casualisation and low paid jobs, work and family balance and the increase in long hours) 
     
  • building support for a fairer Australia to ensure taxes are used responsibly to ensure equal access to essential services such as Medicare, childcare and education 
     
  • the ongoing task of union renewal by reaching out to people through campaigns relevant to issues in the modern
