The Transport Workers’ Union of Australia (TWU) is one of Australia’s leading campaigning trade unions, holding some of the biggest companies in the world to account over their treatment of workers, such as Qantas, Amazon and the supermarket giants.
With a hugely ambitious and exciting work program ahead we have recently expanded our team. We are looking for a national organiser/campaigner that can support our state officials to deliver the national campaign strategy. We’re looking for a creative and determined problem-solver who understands the need to disrupt the status quo in a strategic way, to keep bringing about real reform in the transport industry and give transport workers a powerful voice.
THE ROLE
- Support the development, coordination and execution of the national campaign plans.
- Assist in the implementation of growth strategies.
- Support the training, development and mentoring of organisers and delegates.
- Coordinate action and assist stakeholder activity and outreach.
- Assist with lobbying and political outreach.
- Assist with industry and sector bargaining to build and consolidate power.
- Work with the communications team to develop worker communications and media opportunities.
- Liaise with staff in other departments of the union to achieve success for the campaign.
- Build and manage relationships with staff in TWU state branches.
- Other tasks and responsibilities as directed by the National Secretary and Assistant National Secretary.
KEY SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE ROLE
- A proven track record as a union organiser or campaigner. Experience with supply chain campaigning, training or development a plus.
- A willingness to understand and implement union growth and sector consolidation strategies.
- Some experience in training, developing or mentoring officials or delegates.
- Experience in bargaining is desired but not essential.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communications skills, including demonstrated ability to write reports and draft internal and external communications.
- Good IT communications skills, including experience with Excel and digital communications.
- An interest in learning how to lead other team members.
- A commitment to labour values.
The role will be based in our national office in Sydney, with some interstate travel. A competitive salary is on offer to the successful candidate. The position is full time but willing to discuss part time options.
