AWU: Legal/Industrial Officer

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) is seeking a Legal or Industrial Officer to join our team at the Victorian Branch.

POSITION OVERVIEW

  • Type: Full Time
  • Location: AWU Victorian Office, West Melbourne, VIC
  • Immediate start desirable 
THE ROLE

The successful applicant’s primary responsibilities will be to provide advice and representation in industrial and employment law matters including, but not limited to:

  • disputes and claims arising under legislation and industrial instruments;
  • enterprise bargaining;
  • industrial action;
  • termination of employment and discrimination; and
  • right of entry.
Typical duties include:

  • preparing, managing, and appearing for the AWU and its members in cases before industrial tribunals and courts;
  • preparing related documentation including applications, witness statements, submissions, and briefs;
  • providing legal, industrial and strategic advice to branch leadership, officials, delegates and members;
  • assisting with enterprise bargaining;
  • interacting and liaising with regulatory bodies and industrial/legal staff from other AWU branches and other unions;
  • monitoring and researching developments in legislation and case law;
  • assisting with the preparation and delivery of training to branch officials and delegates in industrial and employment law.

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL

The successful applicant must possess:

  • tertiary qualifications in law or industrial relations, or equivalent experience in a similar role;
  • sound knowledge of Australian industrial relations and employment law;
  • ability to effectively understand, interpret, and apply legislation and statutory industrial instruments;
  • strong advocacy, negotiation, and problem-solving skills;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • proficiency in preparing written submissions and reports;
  • ability to manage and prioritise a varied caseload, exercise good judgement and work independently within a team environment;
  • commitment to unionism and a belief in social justice;
  • high-level computer skills; and
  • ability to obtain a right of entry permit.
DESIRABLE

Applicants will have an advantage in applying for this position if they possess:

  • a current practicing certificate;
  • experience working for a trade union or labour law firm;
  • experience appearing in industrial tribunals and courts;
  • prior involvement in the labour movement or progressive community organisations;
  • experience in enterprise bargaining; or
  • a current driver’s licence.
