Organiser - HSU SA/NT

Job description

The Health Services Union South Australia/Northern Territory Branch (HSU SA/NT) is looking for an energetic and motivated Organiser to help us grow our union and build power for workers across the health and community services sectors.

HSU SA/NT is a growing, member-driven union representing allied health professionals, health professionals, technical and support staff, and community services workers across South Australia and the Northern Territory.

About the role

This is a growth-focused organising position.

Working under the direction of the Union’s Leadership, you will identify and act on opportunities to grow membership, increase union density and strengthen our presence in workplaces.

Rather than being confined to a fixed portfolio, you will work flexibly across workplaces, employers, sectors and campaigns where there is an opportunity to organise and grow the Union.

You will spend a significant amount of time engaging directly with workers — visiting workplaces, recruiting new members, developing workplace leaders and turning opportunities into sustainable workplace organisation.

What you’ll be doing

  • identify and act on membership growth opportunities through workplace mapping, workforce analysis and organising intelligence;
  • develop and implement targeted workplace organising and growth plans;
  • undertake regular workplace visits and recruitment activities;
  • recruit new members and build union density;
  • identify, support and develop workplace delegates and activists;
  • encourage members to participate in campaigns and collective action;
  • implement targeted member retention and re-engagement strategies;
  • communicate with members and potential members about union campaigns and activities;
  • provide industrial advice and support to members where required, working alongside experienced union staff on larger or more complex matters; and
  • contribute to campaigns, enterprise bargaining and other organising priorities as directed by the Union’s Leadership and Senior Organisers.

About you

We are looking for someone who can confidently talk to people, build relationships and turn conversations into action.

  • demonstrated ability to recruit and engage people and work towards measurable targets or objectives;
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • confidence engaging with individuals, small groups and larger audiences;
  • the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and take initiative;
  • a collaborative approach and willingness to contribute to a small, dynamic team;
  • confidence using digital communication tools, databases and standard office software;
  • a strong commitment to union values, social justice, equity and collective action;
  • a current driver’s licence and willingness to travel across South Australia and the Northern Territory; and
  • the ability to obtain and maintain a Right of Entry permit under the Fair Work Act 2009.

Knowledge of, or experience in, the health and community services sector would be an advantage, but is not essential.

Why join HSU SA/NT?

This is an opportunity to join a growing union where your work can have a direct and measurable impact.

You’ll have the opportunity to find new organising opportunities, build the Union in workplaces where workers need a stronger voice, develop the next generation of workplace leaders and contribute to campaigns that improve the working lives of health and community services workers.

If you’re motivated by growth, organising and making change through collective action, we’d love to hear from you.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit a cover letter outlining your suitability for the role, relevant experience, and interest in working with HSU SA/NT.

Applications should be emailed to info@hsusant.org.au with the position title included in the subject line.

Applications will be considered as they are received, and suitable candidates may be contacted prior to the closing date of 17 September 2026 at 5pm.
