The Australian Education Union will launch their $1 million dollar plus Federal Election campaign for public education on Sunday at the AEU Federal Conference being held in Hobart.

The “Public Education – It is our Future” Campaign will be rolled out in the lead up to the Federal Election, and will aim to ensure all the political parties have education policies, that develop and grow the public education systems.

Ms Byrne said the campaign will target parents of school age children and TAFE students, and will include a TV advertising campaign that will highlight the current inequities of Commonwealth funding to private schools.

“The Federal Government pours two-thirds of federal school funding into private schools and only one-third into funding public schools.

This is an issue of great concern to many parents, and the campaign will aim to put all politicians on notice to have policies that are fair and equitable for all Australians or be held accountable,” said Ms Byrne.

Over 2/3’s of Australian students attend public schools.

The Union said some of the additional key issues this campaign will target are:

  • Federal funding for preschool education
  • Increased funding to TAFE
  • Provision of quality programs for Indigenous students and employment of more
    Indigenous educators
  • Launch of $1 million dollar Public Education Campaign
