ACTU calls for rapid decision on Virgin future

Media Release - June 25, 2020

The ACTU has called for Deloitte to make a decision on the future ownership of Virgin Australia by Monday now that three bids have been received.

The call comes on the same day Qantas announced the destruction of 6,000 jobs and growing fears for the future of aviation in Australia

Quotes attributable to ACTU President Michele O’Neil:

“There was a sense of urgency about the future of Virgin Australia before the Qantas announcement and now there is a heightened level of anxiety about the future of the whole aviation industry.

“The workers at Virgin need a rapid decision from Deloitte on who is the successful bidder to become the new owners of Virgin. These workers need to have some certainty about their futures and need to be able to plan their lives.

“The bids are in, the plans are clear so there is no reason to delay. A full week should be enough time to make a decision so we would want to see an announcement no later than Monday. We need to know who Deloitte believes should be the new owners of Virgin so we can bring some certainty to these workers’ lives.”
