The ACTU today welcomes Australia’s first ever national wellbeing framework “Measuring what matters”.
The framework will assess progress against issues and priorities that affect people in their everyday lives, with over 50 indicators to measure progress as a more balanced nation.
The union movement particularly welcomes the Government highlighting equity, inclusion, and fairness as fundamental to all themes the indicators measure.
The union movement strongly believes that secure work, living wages, and time for leisure and recreation away from work are fundamental for a prosperous society and are pleased to see the wellbeing framework reflect these priorities in the choice of indicia.
Quotes attributable to ACTU Assistant Secretary Joseph Mitchell:
“There is more to life than GDP and the launch of the wellbeing framework is a first step towards policy creation which focuses on people, not just numbers.
“Working people value their security in work, wages which provide a decent standard of living, and satisfaction in their work. This framework will enable the Government to assess progress against issues and priorities that affect people in their everyday lives.
“Improving the total quality of life of all Australians should be every government’s foundational purpose. The framework will be a tool which helps this and future governments achieve that purpose.”
