Geoff Gallop Has Made A Real Difference To The Lives Of WA Workers

Media Release - January 16, 2006

One of WAs biggest trade unions has paid tribute to the contribution made by Geoff Gallop, saying that he has made a real difference to the lives of West Australian workers.

Thousands have secure jobs thanks to Geoff Gallop

“There are literally thousands of our members who now have permanent and secure jobs thanks to Geoff Gallop,” LHMU Secretary Dave Kelly said on hearing of the Premier’s resignation today.

” Previously they were either in casual or temporary employment. That meant our members were often on lower rates of pay and they had no certain future.

Engineered growth and security. Allows us to invest in the future

“Thanks to Labor giving those Education Workers, Cleaners, and Hospital Support Workers permanent jobs, they can start to invest in their future – they can take out a home loan, or start a family. That’s good for them and for our economy.

” The State Government has also given people in public sector employment security about their working conditions, unlike the Howard Government who has thrown shift and overtime penalties, and future wage increases into doubt.”

” Geoff Gallop has engineered a period of tremendous growth for WA, and we thank him for it,” Dave Kelly said.

Even his manner of resigning is a brave act of public service

” He has made a courageous decision to resign rather than have his health affect his performance in office.

” And his frankness about his reason for resigning is just another extraordinary public service.

” It will help many others to understand and
seek expert help to deal with depression.

“We wish Geoff Gallop and his family all the best for their future,” the WA LHMU’s Dave Kelly said.
