An OHS Seminar is being organised by the ACTU in Sydney in May to assist unions to achieve healthy and safe workplaces, in the face of changes at work.

The Seminar will provide:

  • an OHS focus on both the future of work and union organising in the lead-up
    to the August 2003 ACTU Congress;
  • assistance in integrating OHS with other union activity; and
  • a unique opportunity for representatives of unions to discuss the impact of
    changes at work on OHS and union organising to improve OHS.
  • The Seminar will include presentations by researchers, representatives of government agencies and unions, and will offer opportunities for discussion of the issues raised.

    On 13 May there will be presentations by:

  • John Buchanan, ACIRRT, coordinator of the Future of Work project for the
    ACTU
  • Philip Bohle, Kathryn Heiler, Elsa Underhill and Richard Johnstone, leading
    researchers on OHS
  • Robin Stewart-Crompton, CEO, National Occupational Health and Safety
    Commission, and John Merritt, Executive Director, WorkSafe Victoria, on
    responses to changing workplace arrangements.
  • On 14 May there will be presentations by:

  • Chris Walton, ACTU Assistant Secretary, on OHS and union organising
  • Richard Marles, ACTU Assistant Secretary, on ACTU OHS action
  • Union and labor council representatives on organising around OHS
