Industrial Officer: North West Organiser / Member Assist Assistant Coordinator

(This position will commence 19 April 2021 and will conclude on 19 April 2024)

The State School Teachers’ Union of W.A. (Inc.) (SSTUWA) represents State School Teachers and TAFE Lecturers across W.A. It is one of the largest trade unions in Western Australia with over 17,500 members, to whom it provides a wide range of both industrial and professional services and representation.

Key Function

This position has two components: North West Organiser 0.5 and Member Assist Assistant Coordinator 0.5

North West Organiser 0.5

As a member of the schools organising team, this position will be primarily responsible for the organising and recruitment of teachers and administrators in pre-primary, primary and secondary schools, and other groups covered by the Schools Agreements. This role will be managed by the Schools Team Coordinator and within the team of organisers with specific district responsibility. This role has specific responsibility for the North West Remote and Regional Schools.

Member Assist Assistant Coordinator 0.5

The Member Assist Assistant Coordinator role will be managed by the Member Assist Coordinator who manages the Member Assist team. The role will be to provide back up and support to implement the daily work of member assist. With the MA Coordinator, this officer will have the support responsibility for ensuring the daily management and functioning of the ‘unit’ in the SSTUWA organisation known as “Member Assist”. Member Assist functions primarily as a ‘call centre’ for member queries. The Member Assist Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the work of this unit in responding to members’ queries and facilitating the redirection of member matters to other areas such as the senior officers, case management team, advocates, specialist industrial staff and the Union's legal firm, as necessary.

Schools Organisers work with members at district / schools to:

  • Organise and implement school / district plans to grow ourunion
  • Support the establishment of active union reps and districtstructures
  • Engage in industrial and professional issues at the branch, district, state and nationallevel
  • Build recruitment and retention action and results within specific schools anddistricts
  • Support union reps to manage union disputes and issues with a collaborative dispute resolution approach
  • Build union pride andactivism
  • Build a Growth CoachingDevelopment
  • Note: This position requires extensive travel in the allocated regional and remote areas of responsibility

Member Assist Assistant Coordinator 0.5 

In this role the officer will support the Member Assist Coordinator in the following:

  • Taking a leadership role in the member assist centre operational plan
  • Supporting the coordinator in the daily business of the member assist centre
  • Assisting with reporting to Senior Officers and Executive on the issues and concerns arising from members
  • Backing up for the over site of the referral of cases to the legal services team and the lawyers
  • Mentoring, inducting and training of new staff and current staff in member assist matters and the fundamental agreement and awards conditions pertinent to member assist work.
  • Gathering and compilation of data on issues confronting members, including maintaining accurate data bases and works with the ICT 'unit' on the enhancement and introduction of systems for data registration and evaluation
  • Supporting industrial staff in responding to member issues and providing advice on trends to Senior Officers and Executive
  • Developing a working relationship with relevant persons and areas within the Education Department to assist with the facilitation of speedy resolution to member issues
  • Recruitment and retention of members, growing and empowering the membership
  • Overseeing and collaborating on aspects of communications
  • Other tasks as directed by the General Secretary


(a)       Full time (75 hours per fortnight) fixed term contract and will conclude on 31 January2024

(b)       Salary level 3.1 ($117,626 per annum) for each year of the four-year contract

(d)       This position requires extensive travel in the allocated regional and remote areas of responsibility

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  1. A commitment to trade unionism and public education.
  2. Must have been employed in the school or TAFE public education sector within the North West
  3. An understanding of legislation, awards and agreements under which SSTUWA members are employed
  4. A knowledge of the major issues currently facing the public education industry and the impact of these on our members (Schools and TAFE)
  5. Skills and experience in team leadership and team management
  6. The ability to engage effectively in recruiting, campaigning and organising of members to build our union
  7. Ability to prioritise work, exercise judgment and initiative with a high level of confidentiality and discretion, while providing a high level of member and team support within a sensitive environment
  8. Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills specifically in relation to a collaborative dispute resolution environment
  9. Sound skills and understanding of information technology as a daily working tool, in particular membership database systems
  10. A current valid WA C class driver’s licence

Desirable Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications and / or research in industrial and / or education fields
